1. How does this monitor work?
The Safe Sense® monitor employs two special sensors in the sensor pad to detect the movements of your baby even through a standard cot's double spring mattress.
The monitor should always be placed on a firm base (which is the common in most baby beds these days, which have a wooden slat base or hardboard base). If your baby's bed does not have a firm base below the mattress (some older cots have springs) please ensure a 1 meter long by 50 cm wide by 5mm thick hardboard sheet is placed between the cot base and the mattress and the sensor pad is placed on top of the hardboard sheet.
Logically, when the infant is asleep, one of the few movements remaining is breathing movements. The Safe Sense® unit uses special software to track the breathing movements and will sound an alarm if:
No breathing has been detected for 20 seconds
Less than 3 breaths have been detected within the 20 second period
Breathing becomes very shallow over a 30 second period
A special alarm reset mode has been designed that will automatically reset if significant movement is detected from the infant within 10 seconds of the alarm sounding (the alarm may rouse them). If no movement is detected within 10 seconds of the alarm, the alarm will sound permanently to ensure the parent attends to the infant. In this case, the alarm can only be reset by powering off the unit.
At first glance, the sensor mat may look very small but years of research has gone into making sure this double sensor system will detect the movement of an infant wherever they may be in a normal size cot (can also be used in bassinets)
2. How do I ensure it is working correctly?
We recommend the following test is carried out daily:
Do not put you baby on the sensor pad
Turn on the Safe Sense® monitor
After a few seconds, the monitor will stabilize and you will hear 3 beeps to indicate the alarm is working. Ensure that no movement is being registered (this will be known as the green light will not flash)
After 20 seconds, the alarm will sound with a red flashing light
Now press your hand up and down on the center of the mattress, after a few seconds of movement, the alarm will reset and continue monitoring.
Leave the monitor alone for 20 seconds until the alarm sounds again
This time let the monitor alarm sound for 10 seconds without touching the mattress
Now touch the mattress - this time the alarm should not reset unless the monitor is physically powered off.
Turn the monitor off to reset the permanent alarm
This concludes the test.
3. My monitor does not seem to be working?
Something is wrong if:
The green light keeps flashing with no baby in the cot - check to ensure that no wind or drafts are blowing across the mattress as this will affect the monitor.
The green light is not flashing, no alarms are heard - check power and batteries
The alarm does not sound after 20 seconds of no flashing green light (the green light is OK) - if the 3 beeps do not sound on power up, return the unit as the alarm is not functioning!
The alarm keeps sounding despite pressing the mattress - ensure the sensor pad lead is connected correctly to the monitor.
The red light flashing a buzzing noise is heard - replace the battery as the unit will not function correctly within 24 hours of this indication.
If you cannot resolve the observations above please email urgent@breathingmonitor.com with a description of your problem
4. Show me the technical specifications
Power - 9V DC battery
Power Consumption - sensor operating: less than 150 micro Amps
Power Consumption - alarm operating: 30 milli Amps
Expected Battery Life - 3 months minimum, 12 months maximum depends on alarm conditions.
Electronics - 2 channel sensors with low pass filtered amplifiers and micro controller driven smarts (with eternal thanks to Microsoft® development software and Microchip® hardware).
5. My monitor's alarm keeps sounding but Baby is OK
This can happen for a number of reasons:
The infant has moved to the extremities of the cot and only shallow breathing is detected. Move them back to their usual sleeping position.
The sensor pad is not connected correctly to the monitor - check this connection
Your infant is breathing less than 3 times in 20 seconds - observe them for this occurrence (note this can be a normal event but if this activity is prolonged, you should consult your doctor for advice)
6. I cannot get my monitor working - HELP!!
